Manatees are often spotted in the waterways of the Lowcountry in the middle of summer as they slowly travel north. The big, walrus-like mammals were sometimes mistaken by drunken sailors as mermaids. Wow! That would be as stretch, because Manatees are often called "Sea Cows" since they can weigh up to 2,000 lbs., grow to 13-feet and eat sea grass in both fresh and salt water.
